The Unique Hawaiian Christmas by Trolley: Hawaiian Santa & Tutu Mele 🎄🤶🎅🏝️

Spending Christmas in Hawaii is a magical experience unlike any other. While the islands are famous for their beaches and tropical vibes, the holiday spirit is just as strong here, blending Hawaiian style with festive cheer. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the Hawaiian Christmas magic of Oahu is by visiting Honolulu Hale during the spectacular Honolulu City Lights.

Santa’s Hawaiian Style Arrival

In true island fashion, Santa’s arrival in Hawaii has a unique twist. Instead of arriving by sleigh, Santa often opts for a surfboard or canoe, spreading aloha as he rides the waves to greet visitors. This laid-back, tropical approach to welcoming Santa brings smiles to kids and adults alike and perfectly captures the blend of holiday joy and island charm.

Honolulu City Lights: A Must-See Christmas Attraction on Oahu

The centerpiece of Oahu’s Christmas celebrations is the Honolulu City Lights at Honolulu Hale. Each December, the historic building transforms into a festive wonderland—Hawaiian style, of course! The massive Christmas tree is illuminated with twinkling lights, and the larger-than-life displays bring a tropical twist to the holiday season.

Among the displays at Honolulu Hale (Oahu’s historic city hall) are a 21-foot-tall shaka-flashing Santa and Mele Tutu (Mrs. Claus). Shaka Santa, casually sitting by the fountain with his feet cooling off in the water, gives the famous Hawaiian “shaka” hand gesture, while Tutu Mele stands nearby with a cheerful smile and gifts in hand. Together, they perfectly embody the laid-back, warm-hearted holiday spirit of the islands.

The shaka hand signal, with three middle fingers folded down, is a common sight in Hawaii and usually means “hang loose.”

Little Trivia: What is Tutu Mele?

Tutu Male is Mrs. Clause in Hawaii. In 1994, Mrs. Claus decided to leave her cozy home at the North Pole and join Shaka Santa in Hawaii. Once she got to the islands, she needed a new name more fitting to her surroundings, so in 1998, she transformed her identity and became Tutu Mele – a name that perfectly reflects her Hawaiian spirit.

    • Tutu: A Hawaiian word for Grandma or Grandpa.

    • Mele: Of Hawaiian origins, meaning “song” or “chant,” often performed to praise a leader or celebrate a momentous occasion.
